SUPERFOOD ROOT VEGETABLE CONTAINER GARDEN

Here are superfood root vegetables to grow in containers.

1. Beets

Beets are definitely a superfood. They contain nutrients and antioxidants that fight inflammation, increase blood circulation, and regulate blood pressure.
Beets take 45 to 60 days to mature. They do well in cooler weather, so they’re perfect for spring and autumn.
Use containers that have a depth of at least 10 inches to allow the roots to grow. And don’t forget to use organic fertilizer, since they’ll quickly absorb the nutrients from the soil.
Don’t throw away the leaves when harvesting beets. You can add them to salads or main meals. Try this recipe for baby beets with their greens.

2. Parsnips

Did you know that you can store super-nutritious parsnips for up to six months? Additionally, this earthy-tasting nutritious root veggie is easy to grow.
If you’re growing parsnips for the first time, start with two to three plants, and use a container that’s at least 24 inches deep. You need to be patient when growing parsnips from seed, since they can take up to 34 weeks to harvest.

3. Rutabagas

With such an unforgettable name, I wonder why rutabagas are not more popular. Adding them to your diet will offer you lots of antioxidants, carotenoids and vitamin C.
If you grow rutabagas in your containers today, they’ll be ready for harvesting in three months. Grow them in deep and wide containers.
If anything goes wrong with the roots, your effort won’t be in vain, since the leaves are also edible.

4. Turmeric

Many of us know the benefits of turmeric, but have you considered growing this superfood in containers at home?
In fact, growing turmeric can give your container garden a tropical look. Grow it in a pot that is at least 12 inches deep.
Turmeric takes up to 10 months to mature. You’ll know it’s ready to harvest when the stems start to dry and the leaves turn yellow.

5. Radishes

If you don’t want to wait for months for your root vegetables to mature, grow radishes. They are ready for harvesting in as little as 23 days.
Another advantage to growing radishes is that they don’t require big containers. A container that’s at least six inches deep will do.
