A North Carolina pastor and father of five who has been searching for a kidney donor will soon receive the life-saving gift.
But here's the twist – his perfect match turned out to be his 27-year-old adopted daughter.
What are the details?
Billy Houze, 64, had expected to wait years on the transplant list after exhausting the possibility of finding a match among his blood-related family members. But that all changed after his daughter DeLauren McKnight decided to find out if she could be a match, ABC News reported.
"I never thought I would be a match because I was adopted," McKnight told "Good Morning America, " ABC News reported. "I got the call at work and I wanted him to be the first person that knew. I called and I said, 'Daddy, I have to tell you something. I'm a match.'"
"He said, 'What are you mad for?' I said, 'No, I'm a match!' He stopped talking and he was crying. I was shaking. It was overwhelming."
Houze and his wife, Karen, adopted McKnight as an infant in 1992.
What's the history?
Houze told ABC News that his kidneys shutdown after having gallbladder surgery in 2016. He told the Shelby Star that he spent 28 days in the hospital and nearly died.
The doctors told him he needed a kidney transplant and that dialysis treatments could keep him alive for about five years.
"And then they told me I would be on the list and it would be seven years before I would possibly get a kidney," Houze said.
Houze, the senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Lawndale, told the newspaper that he immediately started praying for a kidney.
That's when his sons and other family members began testing to see if they could save his life.
None were matches.
On Feb. 1, Houze received the call from McKnight.
"She told me, 'Daddy, you thought you were saving my life pulling me from foster care but in actuality, you were saving my life so I could save yours later,'" Houze said. "I am extremely proud of her."
McKnight couldn't be happier being the one to help her father.
"I call him my Superman," she said. "Without him and my mom, I wouldn't have known where I'd be. There's nothing in this world I wouldn't give him so he can enjoy life and be right there beside me."
When will they have surgery?
The father-daughter duo is reportedly expected to undergo surgery in the coming weeks.
"God told me I would get a kidney in 2019," Houze told the Shelby Star.
