Feminist comedian Samantha Bee dedicated the introduction of her most recent "Full Frontal" episode to mocking the content and box office success of the pro-life film, "Unplanned." While Bee attempted to discredit the film, she was careful to omit a critical portion while playing excerpts from its trailer.
What are the details?
"Unplanned" debuted over the weekend, with the independent film coming in at an impressive fourth place behind three blockbuster films,Fox News reported — despite being blacklisted from several media outlets. Bee began her show by announcing the "anti-choice propaganda movie ... surprised audiences with a not awful showing at the box office."
"It's obviously ridiculous and no one should see it," Bee continued and then mocked the movie's trailer, sarcastically calling it "honestly wonderful, especially in its portrayal of Planned Parenthood."
Bee then played snippets from the "Unplanned" trailer, conveniently leaving out the part where the main actress is sobbing while describing the horror of seeing a fetus writhing in the womb during its death.
The "Full Frontal" host then noted, "Ordinarily, I wouldn't waste precious time talking about a movie so bad ... but the vice president tweeted about it from his official account, which makes it news."
Showing a tweet from Vice President Mike Pence, where he praised the film, Bee joked, "This is incredibly embarrassing, especially when you factor in how low our bar is for vice presidents right now," referring to former Vice President Joe Biden.
Bee went on dismiss the fact that "Unplanned" "sold over 700,000 tickets during its opening weekend, which sounds impressive, until you realize it was mostly Duggars," the family featured in the reality series "19 Kids and Counting."
The far-left activist added, "Now, 'Unplanned' is mostly made up," before she warned against the "real and terrifying laws being passed to limit access to abortion as we speak."
How's 'Full Frontal' doing?
Bee's show debuted in 2016 with anemic ratings, before enjoying a rise that Variety called a "Trump bump" thanks to her criticisms of President Donald Trump both before and after he was elected to office.
But the Trump bump didn't last. The Wrap noted in May that "Full Frontal" had lost 34 percent of viewers in the critical 18-49 age group, and nearly half of Bee's millennial viewers had abandoned her since 2017.
"Those losses are really bad," The Wrap's Tony Maglio pointed out.
In spite of "terrible" ratings even before she called the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, a "feckless c**t," TBS keeps Bee's show on the air. "Full Frontal" has been renewed by TBS through 2020.
