Hillary Clinton ally and former Democratic National Committee field director Adam Parkhomenko mocked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday for falling and was quickly condemned from across the political spectrum for his mean-spirited attack.
"Yesterday I posted this new found footage of Mitch McConnell standing up for America," Parkhomenko wrote in a tweet that included a video of McConnell falling. "368,000 views overnight. Mitch McConnell does not want you to let this video get up to 1,000,000 views."
"McConnell’s diagnosis at age 2 occurred more than 10 years before a vaccine was even available," Roll Call reported in 2018. "His symptoms included paralysis in part of his left leg, and at that time, the best his family could hope for was treatment through rehabilitation. He made periodic visits to Warm Springs, Georgia, home to a polio rehabilitation institute known for also treating President Franklin D. Roosevelt."
Doctors told McConnell's mother that they did not want him to try to walk when he was young because they were worried that he could fall and seriously hurt himself to the point where he would have to be in a brace for the rest of his life.
"So my mother, like a drill sergeant, literally watched me every waking moment for two years," McConnell said. "After two years, my first memory in life was our last visit to Warm Springs, where the nurse told my mother, 'I think he’s going to be OK.'"
Parkhomenko doubled down on his vile attack on McConnell after he was quickly called out, tweeting: "Weird how we never hear about McConnell’s polio when he’s trying to take away people’s healthcare or looking the other way when Rand goes anti-vaxxer. I will delete the tweet when Mitch stops trying to take away coverage from those with pre-existing conditions or...in general."
Here are some of the comments that Parkhomenko's tweet received in response:
Brad Thor: "Seriously @AdamParkhomenko? You realize McConnell suffered from polio and his family almost went bankrupt caring for him, right? For fuck's sake, everyone stumbles. Aren't we all human beings?"
Elaina Plott: "This is disgusting. He suffered from polio as a child."
Mallory Shelbourne: "This is so cruel. Can people put politics aside and be decent? McConnell had polio when he was a child."
Mizanur Rahman: "As someone who was paralyzed around the same age with polio like Sen. McConnell, I can tell you this is not funny. People with post-polio syndrome, like him, me, can struggle with balance due to weakened limbs. Take this down Adam and learn more about polio."
John Cardillo: ".@AdamParkhomenko is a punk who ridicules the handicapped. I don’t care what political side you’re on, this is reprehensible."
Glenn Thrush: "Mitch McConnell @senatemajldr is a polio survivor who has to use a handrail to move up and down stairs at the Capitol..."
Steve Cortes: "Adam I’ll assume you weren’t aware that Mitch McConnell has a seriously disabled leg from polio. But you’re aware now, so are you going to take down this shameful, mocking tweet? If not, then will fellow Hillary Clinton 2016 and DNC alums speak to this cruelty?"
Adelle Malka Nazarian: "This is disappointing. Executive director of the (now defunct) Ready for Hillary super PAC is mocking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for falling when the man had polio as a kid and has a partially paralyzed leg. Are these the America values we want to teach our children?"
Andy Ngo: "You put in a laugh track and music to a video of him falling? McConnell has a leg disability from childhood polio."
Ted Newton: Hey @HillaryClinton - this dude who worked for you is mocking a man who battled childhood Polio for losing his balance. Any comment?"
Mindy Robinson: "McConnell had polio as a kid and his leg is partially paralyzed because of it, you POS. But great way to demonstrate that 'moral superiority' you Dems keep thinking you have over us....."
Steve Guest: "Disgusting. Delete your account."
