During Monday’s episode of “The View,” the panel exchanged thoughts on Senator Bernie Sanders’ recent performance in Democratic voting contests, particularly his landslide victory in the Nevada caucuses last weekend.
According to the Washington Examiner, while co-host Whoopi Goldberg emphasized that most of the states still need to cast ballots before the Democrats nominate a candidate, Meghan McCain hammered the importance of Sanders’ victory margins and what they mean for the long-term future the Democratic Party.
“Bernie leading in the way that he is right now, or at least garnering this huge momentum of popularity, it’s very honest. For conservatives, this is where I think Democrats are at,” McCain told The View. “I think the era of the moderate Democrat is long-gone. I think it’s full socialism, all day long, and at least we now know, as conservatives, that it’s going to be the Squad, and AOC.”
Co-host Joy Behar wasn’t buying McCain’s argument, dismissively saying “I don’t know if that’s true.”
Nonetheless, McCain continued to name prominent socialists, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who has endorsed the candidate, and then proceeded to draw the point home with a particularly devastating reminder.
“That is what I believe,” McCain told the panel, before quipping to Behar: “You love him, you named your dog after him.” As the crowd erupts into laughter, McCain drove the point home, saying “She did, you love him.”
After the laughter subsided, Behar explained why she decided to name her lapdog “Bernie Behar,” and insisted that the name wasn’t a tribute to the socialist, but a joke.
“First of all, I was never all-in on Bernie,” responded Behar, referring to the Vermont senator. “I named my dog after him, it was a joke. I also said I was aroused by him, and that was really a joke. But, I think that at that time, I thought Hillary was a shoe-in, so I was having fun with Bernie. Now, I’m not so sure.”
As The Hill observed in 2015, co-host Joy Behar was “swooning” after Sanders defended Hillary Clinton after she was asked about her email scandal in a Democratic primary debate in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“I thought that Bernie was so mensch-y in that moment, like a real guy. I actually am aroused by him,” Behar told the panel. “I’m serious. I find him to be eye candy, not ear candy, eye candy,” said Behar, who also said that her ideal “type of guy” is an “old Jewish guy who’s a socialist.”
McCain and Behar’s discussion about socialism comes as one of the nation’s two leading political parties comes to grips with the fact that a self-avowed democratic socialist is leading the Democratic primary field, and may become the party’s nominee for president of the United States.
As The Daily Wire reported earlier this week, Bernie Sanders has been facing backlash after he praised the literacy programs of Fidel Castro, the former Cuban murderous communist dictator, during an episode of “60 Minutes” with Anderson Cooper.
“Back in the 1980s, Sanders had some positive things to say about the former Soviet Union and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua,” Cooper said while narrating during the segment. “Here he is explaining why the Cuban people didn’t rise up and help the U.S. overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro: ‘… he educated their kids, gave them health care, totally transformed the society, you know?’”
“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad,” Sanders told Anderson Cooper during an episode of 60 Minutes. “You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?”
“A lot of dissidents imprisoned in Cuba,” Cooper responded.
