53% of Republicans back Donald Trump for 2024 with Mike Pence far behind in second place at 12% and even Don Jr scoring far more support than string of senators

Former President Donald Trump is the overwhelming favorite in a poll of Republicans nearly four years out from the next primary election, following an electoral defeat, a failed overturn effort, a Capitol riot by his supporters, an impeachment and an acquittal.

Trump, who told his supporters following his acquittal in the Senate impeachment trial that 'our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun,' continues to hold majority support nearly a month after leaving office.

He is backed by 53 per cent of respondents in a Politico / Morning Consult survey.

A distant second in the poll is Vice President Mike Pence, who became a chief focus of the impeachment trial, as Democratic managers highlighted Trump's tweet that Pence lacked 'courage' after he began counting votes for Joe Biden in his ceremonial role at a joint session of Congress to count the electoral votes.

Pence had issued a lengthy statement on why he was refusing Trump's demands that he send back votes that had been certified by states for Joe Biden, and video played at trial showed MAGA rioters cheering 'hang Mike Pence.'

Pence gets 12 per cent support in the poll.

Trump's strong showing comes after he got a hero's welcome while driving by cheering supporters in Florida, where he moved Jan. 20th.

There is a steep drop-off after the former president and Pence: Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., 43, gets 6 per cent support. He helped run the Trump Organization while Trump was in office and helped rev up Trump crowds during the campaign while serving as a fierce Trump defender online.

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, the subject of a lengthy Politico profile where she distances herself from Trump, is at 6 per cent.

Prominent Republican senators, most of whom have loyally backed Trump, trailed far behind him in the poll.

They include Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (2 per cent), Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton (1 per cent) and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott (1 per cent).

Two GOP senators who have taken heat for their role in advancing challenges to state-certified electoral votes, Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri, came in at 4 percent and 1 per cent, respectively. Cruz was the last GOP challenger standing against Trump in 2016.

Mitt Romney, the only GOP senator to register support in the poll who voted to convict Trump, gets 4 per cent support.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who made a remark about a 'transition to a second Trump Administration' after Election Day, registered 2 per cent support.

Kristi Noem, the South Dakota governor who hosted Trump at a Mt. Rushmore speech this summer amid the pandemic, got 1 per cent support.

President Joe Biden gets 62 per cent approval in the survey.

The poll was taken immediately after impeachment vote – and far out from the 2022 elections, no less the 2024 primary.

It showed 59 per cent of GOP voters want Trump to play a major role int he party. after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy traveled to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Trump, and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina plans his own pilgrimage.

Trump's overall favorability is at 34 per cent, down from where it hovered throughout his presidency – but gets 81 per cent approval among Republicans.
