The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office was roasted after it posted a video this week highlighting the department’s third annual Pride flag raising.
The video, posted on the department’s TikTok and Twitter accounts, showed members of San Francisco’s police, fire, and sheriff offices raising a rainbow flag alongside an American flag before appearing to salute both flags.
The video played the song “Born This Way,” by Lady Gaga, and zoomed in on rainbow-themed sheriff office’s patches while calling for “visibility,” “unity,” and “equality.” The end of the video showed the Pride flag waving in the wind just below the American flag.
“SFSO’s THIRD ANNUAL PRIDE FLAG RAISING,” the sheriff’s office said in a post. “Happy Pride!”
The raising took place at a county jail to show “the diversity and inclusivity of our community,” according to Sheriff Paul Miyamoto. The San Francisco Fire Department said that it was “honored” to participate in the “historic event supporting progress, diversity, and safety.”
The post was slammed on social media and by some conservative commentators.
“Our enemies are LAUGHING AT US,” conservative commentator Graham Allen said on Twitter. “Absolutely DISGUSTING!”
“Not only our enemies are laughing at us, but so is every law-enforcement agency around the country — looking at this in shame and disgust. This is why San Francisco has been taken over by thugs and drug addicts, and turned into a cesspool,” said Bernard Kerik, a former New York City police commissioner.
“This gotta be the most lib’d up cringe video I’ve ever seen,” one Twitter user said in response to the video.
In response to criticism, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office said that it only saluted the American flag.
“The only flag we salute and wear on our uniform is the American flag. The core values of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office are service, professionalism and pride. We take pride in our commitment to service, and in our deputies who reflect the diversity of the city in which we serve,” the office said.
“Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric does nothing but propagate more hate and undermine our commitment to inclusivity. We will continue to raise the Rainbow flag at our County Jail each year as a way to support and amplify the voices of our LGBTQ+ members,” it added.
In a similar fashion, the CIA was widely mocked after its Pride month post, which celebrated “the rich history, community, and mission contributions of our LGBTQ+ officers.”
