The Islamic Republic of Iran is working to sabotage former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign over fears that Trump term would take strong actions against the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.
An official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said during a press briefing that U.S. intelligence has “observed Tehran working to influence the presidential election” because they want to prevent being held accountable by the U.S.
Under President Joe Biden, Iran’s terrorist proxy groups have dramatically increased their aggression against Israel and the U.S. in the Middle East over the last year following Hamas’ unprecedented terrorist attack on October 7.
The Wall Street Journal reported that just a few weeks ago, Iran had planned to act as a “chaos agent” in the election and that their plan only recently changed to wanting to target and damage Trump’s campaign.
The major events to happen in the U.S. political landscape during that time were the assassination attempt on Trump, President Joe Biden ending his presidential campaign, and Vice President Kamala Harris launching a campaign to become the Democrat Party’s presidential nominee.
Iran is meddling in U.S. elections by using “vast webs of online personas and propaganda mills to spread disinformation” on social media where they are conducting campaigns that reflect their desire that Trump loses, the official said.
The online campaigns include attempts to directly engage with U.S. citizens and influence their thoughts about the election, the report said. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a designated terrorist organization that answers to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is believed to be behind the effort.
Iran has also been trying to assassinate Trump ever since Trump ordered the strike that killed top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in January 2020.
Their efforts have been so serious that the U.S. Secret Service had reportedly increased security around Trump prior to the assassination attempt earlier this month after intelligence obtained from a human source indicated that Iran was planning an attack.
