Media Denies That Kamala Harris Was Biden’s Border Czar Amid Unprecedented Illegal Immigration

Members of the media are trying to create distance between Vice President and presumptive Democrat nominee Kamala Harris and the unprecedented illegal immigration crisis, denying that she was the “border czar” under President Joe Biden.

A wide array of journalists have come out to defend Harris, arguing that she was never tasked with handling the illegal immigration crisis despite Biden publicly tasking her with handling the illegal immigration crisis at the southern border, calling her “the most qualified person to do it.”

Biden’s past statements did not, however, prevent members of the media from attempting to create distance between Harris and the unprecedented crisis on the southern border, which resulted in a record number of illegal border crossings under the Biden-Harris administration.

CNN’s Dana Bash claimed that Harris “was put in charge … of combatting the roots of immigration, she was not and is not the border czar.” A new story from Time Magazine argues that “Harris was never Biden’s border czar,” instead saying that her role was “to focus on examining and improving the underlying conditions” in several Latin American countries that many illegal immigrants come from.

A similar story published this week, this one in USA Today, also attempts to create distance between Harris and the immigration record of the Biden-Harris administration. The article points out that Harris was not “put in charge of the border,” and that her role was instead focused on addressing the “root causes” of mass migration to the border of the United States.

Axios said that it “updated and clarified” a three-year old article today that openly acknowledged that Harris was “appointed by Biden as border czar.” The so-called clarification was made after the outlet published a story claiming that Trump unfairly labeled her with the “border czar” title.

Biden did, however, specifically task Harris to take the lead on efforts aimed at “stemming the migration to our southern border.”

“I’ve asked her, the VP, today — because she’s the most qualified person to do it — to lead our efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle and the countries that help — are going to need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border,” Biden said in March of 2021.

Harris spoke at the same event and assured the public that the administration would “enforce the law” on our southern border. “While we are clear that people should not come to the border now, we also understand that we will enforce the law.”

Harris was previously pressed on her record on the border by CNN’s Lester Holt, who corrected her when she said “we’ve been to the border.” Holt fired back “you haven’t been to the border.” The Democrat Vice President responded, “and I haven’t been to Europe.”

The stories come as polls have found that immigration is one of the most important issues for voters heading into the November election and an increasing share of Americans are in favor of slashing immigration and ramping up mass deportations. Another poll found that only 36% of voters approve of the Biden administration’s performance on immigration.

The Biden-Harris administration has presided over an unprecedented illegal immigration crisis, with an estimated 10 million illegal immigrants unlawfully crossing the border since the two took office.
