During a conversation with former President Donald Trump on Monday, billionaire Elon Musk said that he is not “far-right,” as the media portrays him, but a political “moderate” who is strongly encouraging other moderates to vote for Trump in 2024.
Musk framed the 2024 election as an “important juncture” and said our nation is “in deep trouble” if Trump were to lose.
“I’ve not been very political before. [The media] try to paint me as a far-right guy, which is absurd because I like to make electric vehicles,” Musk said to Trump. “I supported Obama — I stood in line for six hours to shake Obama’s hand [and] historically I was a moderate Democrat.”
“But now I feel like we’re at a critical juncture for the country,” the entrepreneur continued. “This is to people out there who are in the moderate camp, [I] say, I think you should support Donald Trump for president.”
“I actually think it’s a very important juncture in the road, we’re in deep trouble if it goes the other way,” Musk added.
Trump responded to Musk, “I’ve always thought of you as somewhat Left — it’s even more of an honor to have your endorsement.”
The pair spoke for more than two hours on social media platform X, which Musk bought in 2022. They covered a range of topics, including the assassination attempt on Trump’s life, immigration, government waste, free speech, and President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris — Trump’s opponent in the 2024 election.
Notably, hours before the interview, the European Commission told Musk in an open letter that he had to censor so-called harmful content, or else his company could be punished. Using a colorful meme, Musk fired back on X and told the body he would not comply.
In December, Musk said the commission offered X “an illegal secret deal” to quietly censor speech on the platform to evade fines. Musk said he rejected the deal and claimed that other social media platforms had accepted the offer.
