Dancing around a wealth of evidence that she has flip-flopped on a number of policy issues, Vice President Kamala Harris used her first major interview since embarking on her own 2024 presidential campaign to insist her “values have not changed.”
The pre-taped interview on Thursday, in which Harris appeared with her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, featured questions probing her dubious past on matters related to border security, fracking, and more. CNN anchor Dana Bash challenged Harris to answer whether Americans can trust her leading the White House despite jumping around on issues over the years.
“Generally speaking, how should voters look at some of the changes that you have made, that you have explained some of here in your policy?” Bash asked. “Is it because you have more experience now and you have learned more about the information? Is it because you were running for president in a Democratic primary? And should they feel comfortable and confident that what you’re saying now is going to be your policy moving forward?”
In response, Harris said, “I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed.” She began with the environment.
“You mentioned the Green New Deal. I have always believed, and I have worked on it, that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter, to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time,” Harris added. “We did that with the Inflation Reduction Act. We have set goals for the United States of America and, by extension, the globe around when we should meet certain standards for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, as an example. That value has not changed.”
Harris, who has faced bipartisan condemnation for failing to curb illegal immigration as the Biden administration’s “border czar,” also claimed to have a “value” in protecting the U.S. border.
“My value around what we need to do to secure our border, that value has not changed. I spent two terms as the attorney general of California prosecuting transnational criminal organizations, violations of American laws regarding the passage, illegal passage, of guns, drugs, and human beings across our border,” Harris said. “My values have not changed.”
Former President Donald Trump‘s campaign, via its “War Room” account on X, pushed back on the ways Harris sought to paint herself as being consistent on her “values” while giving the run-around on the question of whether she is reliable given her shifts in policy stances. It said in one post, “Kamala Harris confirms she’s still her Radical Left self who supports decriminalizing illegal immigration, the job-killing Green New Deal, eliminating private health insurance, banning fracking, and so much more.”
In other posts, the account drew attention to how Harris has changed her stances on a fracking ban and ending cash bail. It knocked Harris for “allowing millions of illegals to cross our border, giving them amnesty, and free rein to terrorize our communities.” The “War Room” account also highlighted Harris’ comments on climate change, quipping with the intent to underscore yet another word salad from the VP, that it evoked “[that feeling when] the essay is due in 10 minutes but you haven’t hit the word count yet.”
